At what age should I begin reading to my child?
I know, I know admit it - it seems silly to read to an infant when all he wants to do is suck on the pages and push it out of the way. Have patience! Let your baby stand or play while you read and know that he is listening and hearing the sounds even if it doesn't appear to be so (those positive communication skills still have many years to develop!). As the ever-growing infant brain acquires language, he will greatly benefit from hearing repeating sounds and words. Keep it up!
My son's favorite book is a short rhyming book. I hadn't realized that I had memorized portions of the book until it just started coming out of me one day as I was changing his diaper. He looked at me with amazement and understanding and then giggled. When I finished, he gave me a big "huggy" and "kissy" (The title of the book!). He had been hearing it all along! Try it - could result in a big, slobbery lovey for you!
