How can I engage in fun reading practice with my kid at home?

Parents, kids will be MUCH more excited about reading and writing if they see YOU reading and writing and if they understand the importance of reading and writing. Now is your chance! Try one idea a month and feel it out. Before you know it, your family will be reading and laughing together and your kids will be begging for more! Trust me.

  • Read out loud to a neighbor, pet, stuffed animal, relative on Skype, etc.

  • Learn the name of the children's librarian at your local branch and get to know them

  • Listen to an audiobook as a family

  • Create a family book club where you each read the same book independently (or together) and then discuss it…make it fun and have your discussion picnic style or with special treats that are related to the book

  • Try reading the first book in a series that you haven’t tried before

  • Keep a journal or diary and include memorabilia (movie ticket stubs, a  pressed flower from a hike, a photo from a trip to the beach, etc.)

  • Write a letter or an email to a friend or family member

  • Jot down something you are grateful for each day

  • Write a how-to book that teaches how to do something your family enjoys doing together

  • Write poems and post/hide them around your home…on the fridge, on the bathroom mirror, inside a cabinet door, on your parents/guardians nightstand, next to the fruitbasket, on the back of a cereal box of cereal

  • Write important dates and events in a planner or on a calendar

  • Make a list (groceries, packing, chores, fun new things to try)

  • Write a song

  • Write to an author that you read and tell them what you enjoyed about their book.  Include a thoughtful question, and you may receive a reply!

  • Parents, kids will be inspired to read if they see you reading! Grab your own book and find a cozy spot.  Set aside 20 minutes of quiet reading time every day, where each family member reads their own book (looking at pictures ‘counts’ for non-readers!).

  • Have conversations that discuss connections between characters in books and characters in movies or TV shows.
